TRANSPOSE

Returns an array with its rows and columns transposed.

Syntax:

TRANSPOSE(array)

array may be either an inline array or a range, containing all numbers.

Example:

TRANSPOSE({1,2,3;4,5,6})

returns [[1,4],[2,5],[3,6]]

Application:

Imagine you are the manager of a company that manufactures furniture. You have a list of your monthly sales data, which is currently organized with the months as rows and the product categories as columns.

You want to present this data to your marketing team, but they prefer to see the sales organized by product category for each month. To do this, you use a TRANSPOSE function.

How TRANSPOSE is used:

The TRANSPOSE function takes the original table and flips it, effectively swapping the rows and columns. The first row of the original table ("Tables") becomes the first column of the new table. The second row ("Chairs") becomes the second column, and so on. Similarly, the original columns ("January," "February," etc.) become the new rows.

The TRANSPOSE function allows you to change the orientation of the data. This is useful for many reasons, such as making the data easier to read for specific audiences, preparing data for different types of analysis, or simply to fit a different layout on a report. In this case, the transposed table makes it much easier to compare the sales performance of all furniture categories within a single month, which is what the marketing team was looking for.
