MODE.MULT

Returns an array of the most frequently occurring numbers in a numeric data set.

It will return one number if only one mode is found in the data set.

Syntax:

MODE.MULT(numberOne, [numberTwo],…)

numberOne, [numberTwo],… are 1 to 255 arguments representing the numbers that you want to use to find the mode/modes. These arguments can be numbers, cell references or ranges.

Example:

If numberOne, [numberTwo],… contains 1,1,1,1,2,2,2,2,2,2,3,3,4,4,4,4,5,5,5,5,5:

MODE.MULT(1,1,1,1,2,2,2,2,2,2,3,3,4,4,4,4,5,5,5,5,5)

returns 2

If numberOne, [numberTwo],… contains 1,1,1,1,2,2,2,2,2,3,3,3,4,4,4,4,5,5,5,5,5:

MODE.MULT(1,1,1,1,2,2,2,2,2,3,3,3,4,4,4,4,5,5,5,5,5)

returns [2,5]

Application:

Let's imagine a small company that sells handcrafted jewelry online. They want to analyze their sales data to understand which prices are the most popular among their customers. They have a dataset of the prices for the last month's sales. The company wants to identify all the prices that have been purchased most frequently.

Here is a table representing a sample of their sales data for a single day:

The company wants to find the mode(s) of the prices in the 'Price ($)' column.

Using the MODE.MULT function in a spreadsheet application, you would apply the function to the range of prices:

MODE.MULT(C1:C11).

The function would analyze the data and return an array of the most frequently occurring numbers.

Here's the breakdown of the frequencies for each price:

  • $35: 3 times
  • $75: 3 times
  • $45: 3 times
  • $120: 1 time
  • $60: 1 time

Since the prices $35, $45, and $75 all occurred 3 times, which is the highest frequency, the MODE.MULT function would return the array {35, 45, 75}.

This tells the company that there are three equally popular price points for their products, and they can use this information to inform their pricing strategy, marketing campaigns, or inventory management. For example, they might decide to create more products in these popular price ranges.

Result for MODE.MULT:

[35,45,75]
