Looks at a range, compares each value in the range with the specified value, and returns the count of matches.
COUNTIN(range, value)
range is required, and is the range of cells that you want COUNTIN to look at.
value is required, and is the value that you want to find in the range.
Example:
If range, found in A1:A10, contains numbers 1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3, 1 and value, found in B1, contains 2:
COUNTIN(A1:A10, B1)

Let's imagine you are an event organizer, and you are taking a poll to see which day of the week people prefer for a community gathering. The options are "Friday," "Saturday," and "Sunday."
Here is a table of the responses you have collected:
Person | Preferred Day | ||
|---|---|---|---|
A | B | ||
1 | Alex | Saturday | |
2 | Ben | Sunday | |
3 | Chloe | Friday | |
4 | Daniel | Saturday | |
5 | Emma | Saturday | |
6 | Frank | Sunday | |
7 | Grace | Friday |
You want to use a COUNTIN function to find out how many people chose "Saturday." The function will look at the range of responses and count every instance where the value is exactly "Saturday."
COUNTIN (Preferred Day, "Saturday")
The result of the COUNTIN function would be 3, telling you that exactly three people chose "Saturday" as their preferred day.
