SMALL

Returns the  smallest value in a list of numbers.

Syntax:

SMALL(numberlist, n)

returns the nth smallest number within the (unordered) range or array of numbers numberlist.

Example:

SMALL(B1:B4, 3)

where cells B1, B2, B3, B4 contain 4, 7, 5,and 8, returns 7. The lowest number is 4, then 5, then the third lowest is 7.

Application:

Suppose you are a high school track coach and you want to find the times of the 2nd, 3rd, and 5th fastest runners in the 400m race to see how your team is performing. You have the following race results:

Runner

Time (seconds)

A
B
1
Alice
65.2
2
Bob
63.8
3
Charlie
67.5
4
David
62.1
5
Eve
64.9
6
Frank
68.3
7
Grace
63.4

Using the SMALL function, you can find the times of the runners with the lowest times.

  • To find the time of the 2nd fastest runner (the 2nd smallest value): SMALL(B1:B7, 2) which would return 63.4.
  • To find the time of the 3rd fastest runner (the 3rd smallest value): SMALL(B1:B7, 3) which would return 63.8.
  • To find the time of the 5th fastest runner (the 5th smallest value): SMALL(B1:B7, 5) which would return 65.2.

Result for the time of the 2nd fastest runner:

63.4

Result for the time of the 3rd fastest runner:

63.8

Result for the time of the 5th fastest runner:

65.2
