Calculating Total Cost
Imagine you are a small business owner who sells handmade jewelry. You have a spreadsheet to track your inventory and calculate the total cost of materials for a batch of products.
Your spreadsheet might have a table like this:
Item | Quantity | Unit Price | ||
|---|---|---|---|---|
A | B | C | ||
1 | Silver Chains | 15 | $8.50 | |
2 | Glass Beads | 450 | $0.25 | |
3 | Clasps | 30 | $1.10 |
To calculate the Total Cost for each item, you would multiply the Quantity by the Unit Price.
Silver Chains:
Glass Beads:
Clasps:
After performing these calculations, your updated table would look like this:
Item | Quantity | Unit Price | Total Cost | ||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
A | B | C | D | ||
1 | Silver Chains | 15 | $8.50 | $127.50 | |
2 | Glass Beads | 450 | $0.25 | $112.50 | |
3 | Clasps | 30 | $1.10 | $33.00 |
This example demonstrates how a multiplication function (or the * operator) is used in a practical business setting to perform a common and necessary calculation. The function takes two numbers as input (Quantity and Unit Price) and returns a single number as the output (Total Cost).
